5 Tips For Travelling While Pregnant

1) Plan ahead—Always check with the Government of Canada’s travel advisory page here (link to http://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories) to ensure the safety of travelling to your destination. Allow plenty of time for travel to accommodate rest breaks, bathroom stops and snack time. Pack a range of wrinkle-free clothing that’s appropriate for your destination. Bringing an extra layer for in-plane travel and the air-conditioned cabin can also be a comfort.
2) Pack for comfort—Slip-on shoes, an extra pair of cushioned insoles, blister pads or moleskin…these are some of the simple things you can pack to make walking easy and comfortable. Some of the other obvious bring-alongs include sunscreen, a hat, and a travel pillow. See below for a travel-day packing list if you’re flying.
3) Take it easy—If you’re used to unwinding by doing something active or adventurous, swap plans for something more relaxing. A swim, reading a book, or taking a nap can help you recharge.
4) Appreciate the food—Eat as many fruits and vegetables as possible, and take care to stay hydrated. This will help you avoid nausea and constipation. Experiment with different foods if you’re in an exotic location, but pay special attention to how your body responds and make changes accordingly.
5) Plan regular breaks—Try to plan several breaks in a day, especially if you can arrange a break that lets you put your feet up. This will help avoid swollen feet and ankles, which can be very uncomfortable and could require medication to ease.
Other Considerations for Pregnant Women
Packing list for air travel—Keep these items on hand as you navigate your way through airport terminals and flights:
- Healthy snacks such as dried fruit or cereal bars
- A bottle for water
- Hand gel and hand wipes
- If you’re flying after 28 weeks of pregnancy, a note from your doctor or midwife
- Your pregnancy notes if you’re in your third trimester
- A list of any medication you’re taking
- Contact details for a local doctor or hospital in the region you’re travelling to
- Contact information for your doctor or family back home
